CHAPTER TEN
âGood heavens, Nora! What happened to your face?â Emily didnât bother masking her horror.
Nora opened her mouth to reply but August beat her to it. âShe was mugged. It was horrible. But youâd be proud of her. She fought him off. For real, you should see the other guy.â
Leo choked on his beer.
Emily gasped. âI donât know how I feel about you living somewhere this dangerous.â
âItâs not so bad, Mother. San Francisco was worse,â Nora reassured her, wishing August would think of a more mundane story next time.
âHow many times were you mugged in San Francisco?â
âWell, none, but thatâs not the point.â
Emily fixed her with a pointed glare. âThatâs exactly the point.â
âIâm not moving back to California, Mother.â Nora effectively ended the conversation.
âGo get in comfy clothes,â August instructed. âIâll make you some soup.â
âAre we not going out to dinner, Nora?â Emily asked.
Nora hesitated at the door. âUnder the circumstances, I was kind of hoping we could stay in.â
âEat in?â The concept seemed foreign to Emily.
âSure!â August took control of the conversation. âCome on, Emily. You can help me get dinner going.â
Emily eyed the wild-haired redhead. Nora could only begin to guess what she thought of Augustâs boho skirt and the t-shirt that said, âIâm sorry, did I roll my eyes out loud?â
âOkay, what do you need me to do?â Emily asked.
âIf you can chop the veggies, Iâll get started on the soup base.â August started grabbing things from the fridge, not waiting to see if Emily agreed or not.
âHello?â Rafael called from the front door.
âWeâre in here!â August called out. A moment later, Rafael appeared in the doorway, his smile fading when he saw Noraâs face.
Before he could even ask what happened, Emily rounded on him. âMy daughter was mugged in your city. What are you going to do about it?â
Panic splashed across his face as he looked from Emily back to Nora, who shook her head no and rolled her eyes.
âYouâre going to want this.â Leo handed Rafael a beer from the fridge. âI think Iâm going to go check on Charlotte and Margo.
âNora, go change. Rafael, go with her so she can fill you in.â August was being uncharacteristically bossy, but Nora didnât mind. It was nice to have someone else take charge for the night. It was especially nice watching her mother struggle to keep up with someone.
Sensing Nora didnât want to talk in front of her mother, he waited until they were alone in her room to press the subject.
âNora, please tell me you werenât mugged.â
âNo, August was just trying to get my mother off my back.â Nora left out that August had given every person who asked a different response.
âWhat happened? Are you okay?â
âIâm fine,â she promised. âAnd Iâll tell you what happened, but first Iâm going to remind you that you love me and ask you not to be too mad.â
âThatâs a concerning way to start your story.â
âI walked into a door.â
He quickly caught his bark of laughter. âYou just walked into a door? Why would I be mad aboutâ¦wait⦠where was this door, Nora?â
âDianeâs office.
